Carla Busuttil

08.02 – 31.03.2020

Johannesburg-born Carla Busuttil presents « Sunset Debris », a body of work in which she addresses themes primarily related to the politics of power.

Although she lives in the UK, much of Busuttil’s work is influenced by the context of her childhood in late Apartheid South Africa. At the heart of her work are characters occupying hyper-privatised spaces, like spectres of colonialism and wealth inequality. The recurrence of stereotypical motifs such as the figure of the British schoolboy thus evokes these new segregated environments.

At Jardin Rouge, Carla Busuttil draws deep inspiration from Morocco. From the architecture to the zellige motifs, the artist’s encounter with the local heritage is embodied in the subtle tension between arabesques and geometric forms. The line is free, spontaneous and incisive.
