POES

28.05.2022 – 17.07.2022

A history and literature enthusiast, he attended the Sorbonne University mainly for access to its fantas-tic library. During a visit to the Louvre Museum and after discovering the Mesopotamian cylinder seals, the artist immersed himself in the history and stories of the matrix of civilizations. From then on, he has never ceased to rewrite these legends in his own way.

MESOPOPOES is a playful and joyful interpretation of Mesopotamian writing. In this new body of work, the artist intertwines stories from his worship of Mesopotamian culture and the more recent ones from monotheistic cultures. He paints the polysemy of the stories and moves the questioning towards new myths.

His narrative is previously thought and scripted in multiple notebooks. We rediscover Gilgamesh and the celestial bull, the lunar God Sin, the Goddess Ishtar, the androcephalic animals … Colorful, humorous and anachronistic, the artist likes to saturate his paintings with signs, metaphors to offer a personal vision of these stories.

The artist also questions the transmission, the evolution of writing and the memory of civilizations. We glimpse the endless quest for the immortality of men and the difficult acceptance of wisdom. Poes allows himself to fragment and preach a new narrative. Iconoclast, the artist reinvents stories where everyone is free to interpret, to play with the myths.
